Affordable Housing
Eva's Village Apartments will soon provide affordable housing to Paterson residents. Construction is underway on a 51 unit complex near Eva's main site. The housing crisis for the poor has been created by the widening gap between the number of affordable housing units and the number of people needing them. This is especially true for Paterson, one of New Jersey's poorest cities. According to the 2000 census, 22% of its residents live below the poverty line, nearly three times the state average. The city's median household income is $32,778. Compared to the state of New Jersey ($55,146), Paterson households earn nearly $23,000 less than their fellow citizens. Paterson's unemployment rate has consistently been 3-4% higher than the state of New Jersey overall, which as of December 2009 was 10.1%.
Eva's Village Apartments will include efficiencies and one, two and three bedroom units. Paterson residents who meet income levels would be eligible to apply. "As a comprehensive anti-poverty organization we are truly excited and pleased to be able to bring the mission of Eva's Village full circle. We are blessed to be able to provide affordable housing to residents of Paterson that is safe and beautiful. Eva's Village Apartments will be a place where people can live with the dignity and respect they deserve," commented Sister Gloria Perez, executive director.
According to the Brookings Institute, "New Jersey faces the toughest housing challenges of any state in the nation". Our Eva's Village Apartments (50 apartments) provides affordable housing for those in need an allows us to provide a true continuum of care.
